From Farm to Feast: Greenwich Farmers Markets

January 30, 2020

Greenwich’s history is itself steeped in farming. Much of the land across the region—aside for the shoreline—was once dotted with early-settler and small family farms. Though on a smaller scale today, Connecticut continues to have an abundance of farms and small-batch style producers of prepared foods. Two of the best places to discover some of these local institutions and reap from their harvests is at the Greenwich Farmers Market and Old Greenwich Farmers Market.

The Greenwich Farmers Market is a weekly, seasonal event, held every Saturday from May to December at the Arch Street/Horseneck Lane Commuter Lot. This is a producers-only market. Patrons buy direct from local farmers across Connecticut—everything from organic fruits and vegetables to meats, honey and jams, fresh seafood, and farmers’ market favorites like apple cider doughnuts. The Greenwich Farmers Market is celebrating nearly 30 years of serving the Greenwich community; its 2020 season begins on May 16th.

The Old Greenwich Farmers Market—located at 38 West End Avenue, in the parking lot of the Living Hope Community Church—begins its weekly season Memorial Day weekend 2020. This family-oriented event was founded in 2010. Vendors hail from local farms, such as Smith’s Acres Farm, Riverbank Farm, and Woodland Farms, and other Connecticut-based suppliers of culinary goods and services.
